Travel Trailer Insurance FAQs

Are you looking for comprehensive insurance solutions for your travel trailer? Take a look at some of the most frequently asked questions we receive as a leading insurance firm regarding travel trailer insurance in Ontario before getting a free insurance quote and speaking to a representative from Bevan Insurance for more information.

Will this coverage protect my trailer from any malfunction or breakdown?

In the event your travel trailer experiences a malfunction or complete breakdown, it’s essential that travel trailer owners have a comprehensive roadside insurance policy that protects them in the event they are stranded on the way to their next destination.

Roadside assistance is a standard insurance policy many vehicle owners choose to purchase as it provides numerous benefits in cases of emergencies, including coverage of all expenses when you experience a flat tire, battery malfunction, electrical breakdown, or mechanical breakdown. These insurance policies also include covering the cost of towing to the nearest auto mechanic location and all repair costs.

However, the same insurance benefits can also extend to travel trailers as an additional coverage policy. Like with auto insurance plans, travel trailer owners will need to add on this protection as a secondary feature to their insurance portfolio. This is because basic insurance policies only include liability insurance and comprehensive insurance.

Nonetheless, if roadside assistance insurance is something that you wish to purchase as a part of your travel trailer insurance, then the professional insurance specialists at Bevan Insurance are here to help. We’ll help find an insurance policy for roadside assistance that provides you with the peace of mind knowing that you are covered in the event your travel trailer should suffer a breakdown or any other type of damage when you are on the road. With access to numerous high-quality insurance companies, we’ll provide you with unbiased suggestions that will help you get the most coverage options while staying within the constraints of your budget.

Is my auto insurance policy sufficient to cover my trailer?

Generally speaking, while some auto insurance plans may extend to your travel trailer, others do not. Therefore, it is highly important that you call and speak with a representative from your auto insurance firm to confirm whether or not your travel trailer is covered. If it is not, then you will need to purchase a separate coverage policy that protects your travel trailer when it is in motion. Typically, this will include liability insurance and comprehensive insurance coverage. However, it can also include collision coverage as well.

Travel trailer owners should keep in mind that liability insurance and comprehensive insurance coverage will only provide them with coverage when the trailer is attached to its towing vehicle and in motion. Therefore, when you are parked at your destination, have your travel trailer in storage, or your trailer is detached from its towing vehicle, you will not have insurance coverage.

For this reason, you may wish to purchase additional insurance policies, including content coverage, policy protections for rodent damage, or campsite coverage. This will provide you, your trailer, and your belongings with protection when you are staying at your destination or living in your travel trailer for an extended period of time.

Regardless of what your current auto insurance may offer your travel trailer, you can rest assured knowing that when you’re working with Bevan Insurance, we’ll make sure that you find the perfect insurance policy for your trailer that works for your needs. That way, you can confidently head from destination to destination without having to worry if you are protected in the event of an accident or other covered insurance claim.

What are the various types of travel trailers insurance available?

Unlike other recreational vehicles that fall under the category of Class A Motorhomes, Class B Motorhomes, and Class C Motorhomes, due to their ability to function independently from an operating vehicle, often, travel trailers are protected by the owner’s auto insurance plan that extends to the trailer itself while it is in motion. With that said, while this is common for many auto insurance plans, not all policies authorize this.

Before getting on your next adventure, it’s essential that travel trailer owners speak with their auto insurance broker to confirm whether or not their recreational vehicle has extended coverage when on the road.

On the other hand, should your auto insurance policy extend to your travel trailer when it is in motion; it will not provide coverage while you are parked or when the trailer itself is detached from its towing vehicle. Additionally, should your auto insurance extend to your travel trailer, it will not cover the contents found within your travel trailer.

Therefore, to ensure your travel trailer and your belongings are comprehensively protected at all times, you may wish to consider purchasing the following travel trailer insurance in Ontario. Remember, it is best to confirm whether your auto insurance extends to your travel trailer before buying insurance to avoid paying double. Then, with the help of the insurance specialists at Bevan Insurance, we’ll help you craft an insurance portfolio with additional coverage options to ensure your policy protects you at all times.

Here is how the professional insurance team at Bevan Insurance is prepared to help you:

Collision Coverage
Collision insurance coverage provides protection to your travel trailer, including the contents stored within your travel trailer in the event of a collision, no matter who is deemed responsible. Collision insurance will also cover the cost of repairs for your travel trailer’s amenities and its structure. However, to redeem this policy, travel trailer owners will need to pay their pre-agreed upon deductible amount with coverage up to their policy maximum limit.

Comprehensive Coverage
Comprehensive coverage provides your travel trailer with protection against natural disasters, vandalism, and theft. Clients will also be required to pay a deductible for complete coverage.

Additional Travel Trailer Insurance Coverage
Beyond these fundamental travel trailer insurance policies, you are also able to purchase additional policy features that will provide you with further coverage when you are traveling between destinations. Here is a closer look at these additional policy features Bevan Insurance can help you customize to your unique needs.

If I live in my trailer, will this be considered home insurance or trailer insurance?

Generally speaking, your travel trailer will be covered under your home insurance policy when your travel trailer is parked on the same property as your home. During this time, your travel trailer will be treated as your “personal belongings” or another “structure” that is present within your property line. As such, if your travel trailer is damaged while it is on the same property as your home that is covered under homeowners’ insurance, then you can rest assured knowing that your trailer will be protected against damage, theft, and vandalism.

However, if you live in your trailer full time, on a property, or at a location that does not have a secondary residence or home that is covered by homeowners’ insurance, you may wish to purchase part-time or full-time travel trailer insurance.

Full-time trailer insurance is a form of optional insurance coverage that provides travel trailer owners with protection if they live in their travel trailer for more than six months out of the year. With this type of insurance coverage, full-time residents in their travel trailer will receive the following coverage:

Personal Liability Coverage
Personal liability coverage will provide you with protection against property damage you cause to a third-party property due to an accident when you are parked.

Medical Liability Coverage
Medical liability coverage will cover all medical expenses for third parties who experience bodily harm while they are near or in your parked travel trailer. This coverage includes medical expenses, funeral costs, and legal expenses if a lawsuit should be filed against you.

Contents Liability Coverage
Contents coverage protects your belongings stored within your travel trailer from damage, vandalism, and theft.

Travel trailer owners should know that, similar to homeowners insurance; they are not required by law to purchase full-time travel trailer insurance. However, without it, you put your travel trailer at risk of suffering damage that will not be covered. As a result, you may end up having to pay hundreds to thousands of dollars in repairs and losses on belongings. Furthermore, without proper full-time travel trailer insurance, you can also be held accountable for third-party injuries and damages to third-party property damage that can lead to expensive lawsuits that can ruin your assets and put your interests at risk.

On the other hand, you may also wish to purchase insurance policies that provide you with protection when you are traveling with your trailer between destinations, which is something we can discuss in more detail when you speak with one of our expert insurance specialists.

Therefore, if you are considering living full-time in your travel trailer, the team at Bevan Insurance can help you craft a full-time insurance policy that allows you to live comfortably and confidently wherever your destination may be. Our insurance specialists have the tools and industry expertise to ensure your needs are met at every step of the process.

Our Case Study

Who We’ve Helped

A commercial account also owns the adjacent house to their business location that was used as a rental property. Unfortunately the insured suffered a major loss when the rental property caught fire and was destroyed. In conversations with our insured throughout the claim they told us they were thinking of accepting a cash payout from the insurer instead of rebuilding the property.
